How to write comedy

#plot#characters

Exaggerate Flaws

Amplify your character's flaws to a comedic level.

EXAMPLE

Michael Scott from "The Office" is extremely immature -- despite being the office manager.

Literal Interpretation

Have your character take things literally.

EXAMPLE

Drax from "Guardians of the Galaxy" can't understand metaphors. This leads to lines like "Nothing goes over my head ... my reflexes are too fast."

Unexpected Reactions

Give your character unexpected reactions to common situations.

EXAMPLE

In "The Big Bang Theory," Sheldon applies scientific logic to everyday social interactions, often missing the emotional point entirely.

Quirky

Give them memorable and funny habits -- as long as they fit their personality.

EXAMPLE

Luna Lovegood from "Harry Potter" wears radish earrings and believes in creatures no one else does.

Witty Banter

Let them banter with other characters.

EXAMPLE

Spider-Man often makes light of the situation during a fight. An example is, "You have a metal arm? That is awesome, dude!"

Misplaced Confidence

A character with unearned confidence can be hilarious. Make them blind to their flaws.

EXAMPLE

Zapp Brannigan in "Futurama" has unwarranted self-assurance that leads to flawed plans and decisions.

Contrast

Place them in a setting or role that contrasts with their personality.

EXAMPLE

Ron Swanson from "Parks and Recreation" works in government yet detests it.

Knowledge

Give them a passion and deep knowledge about something everyone thinks is dumb.

EXAMPLE

Ross from "Friends" brings up dinosaurs at strange moments. This derails conversations in funny ways.

Unique

Make them unique and stand out from others in a funny way.

EXAMPLE

Edna, in "The Incredibles," has a distinct fashion sense that makes her stand out.

Running Jokes

Develop a running gag associated with your character.

EXAMPLE

In "Arrested Development," Gob's failed magic tricks provide ongoing laughs, especially when he makes his family's yacht "disappear" by sinking it.

Self-Awareness

A funny character with self-awareness can add humor.

EXAMPLE

Deadpool is aware he’s in a movie. This makes his jokes connect to the audience -- like commenting on the budget for X-Men cameos.
