How to write vivid description

2-minute read
#description

Senses

Use all 5 senses.

EXAMPLE

In "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer", Grenouille's obsession with scent paints 18th-century France through its smells, making the setting palpably vivid.

Specificity

Be specific. Instead of saying "flower", say "a dew-kissed rose at dawn".

EXAMPLE

Hemingway’s "The Old Man and the Sea" describes the marlin’s skin as "blue as a sword fish's and polished as steel"

Color

Use colors to convey mood and atmosphere. A "blood-red sky" can foreshadow danger; a "pale, washed-out sun" might hint at despair.

EXAMPLE

In "The Great Gatsby", the green light at the end of Daisy's dock represents Gatsby's unattainable dreams.

Purpose

Every detail should add to the story or character. Describe your character’s worn-out shoes to show their hard journey, not just because you can.

EXAMPLE

In "To Kill a Mockingbird", Scout's tomboyish clothing reflects her rebellious spirit and childhood innocence.

Perspective

Take into account the POV character. A chef sees the world through flavors, a detective notices details others miss.

EXAMPLE

In "Sherlock Holmes", Holmes' detailed observations, like the type of mud on shoes, reveal not clues and his detective skills.

Metaphors

Use metaphors and similes!

EXAMPLE

"The sky was a bruised purple, like a peach too ripe to touch", not just "the sky was purple".

Active

Incorporate action. Instead of describing a static scene, show life happening — leaves rustling, crowds moving, hearts racing.

EXAMPLE

In "Lord of the Rings", Tolkien doesn’t just describe Middle-earth; he shows it in motion, from the Shire’s gentle hills to Mordor’s fiery chasms.

Contrast

Use contrasts to make descriptions pop.

EXAMPLE

In "A Tale of Two Cities", Dickens contrasts the aristocracy's opulence with the peasantry's squalor to highlight social injustices.
